The School of Sociology of V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University was founded in 1990 and became the first School of Sociology in Ukraine.

The School offers the following programs:

Bachelor's degree program (4 years of study) in Sociology; Political Science; Social Communications, Advertising and PR; Media Communications and Public Relations; Social Work..

Specialist degree program (1 year) in Sociology; Social Work; and Political Science.

Master’s degree program (1.6 years) in Sociology; Media Communications; Political Science..

The School teaches more than 550 full-time and part-time students from Ukraine, Russia, China, Nigeria, Turkmenistan, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Moldova, Kazakhstan.

Every year, the School’s six departments offer their students new specializations. Today, they are Sociocultural Examination, Social Structures and Processes, Social Communications, Methods of Sociological Research, Political Marketing and Political Consulting, Political Sociology, Social Process Management, Social Management, Social Security.

Sociology students, social workers, and political scientists study over 100 various courses, including Methodology and Organization of Sociological Research, Sociology of Advertising, Political Imagology, Social Policy, Psychology of Mass Communications, Theory of Advertising, Sociology of Markets, Practical Marketing, Theory of Public Relations, Basics of Public Relations, Theory of Parties and Party Systems, etc. In May 1996, at the initiative of sociologists, political scientists, and V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University, the East-Ukrainian Foundation for Social Research was established. The mission of the East-Ukrainian Foundation for Social Research is to support scientific, socio-technological, and socio-engineering activity on the basis of modern achievements in sociology, economics, political science, law, social psychology, urban studies, and other social sciences. In 2011, the School opened a press center, which is a base for practical training of students studying social communications.

Top students of the School are awarded honorary scholarships named after the world famous scholars M. M. Kovalevskyi and O. O.Yakuba.

The School’s alumni work at universities, advertising and marketing agencies, media, press services, public opinion research companies, bodies of public administration and local self-government, social services, etc.

The School’s students actively participate in numerous competitions, contests, and the like. In the 2010—2011 academic year alone, they took prize-winning places at the All-Ukrainian Contest of Student Research Papers in Sociology and Political Sciences; the All-Ukrainian Student Competition in Sociology; the University stage of the P. Yatsyk International Competition of Ukrainian Language Experts; the International Academic Ranking of Popularity “Golden Fortune”; competitive selection for the Viktor Pinchuk Foundation Scholarship Program “Zavtra.UA” in psychology and sociology.

The School of Sociology offers postgraduate and doctoral programs. The School has the Thesis Committee for defense of doctoral theses in Sociology in three specialties: 22.00.01 – Theory and History of Sociology, 22.00.04 – Special and Sectoral Sociology, 22.00.03 – Social Structures and Social Relations.

The School has modern facilities and is constantly working on their improvement.
