Currently, four departments of the School of Mathematics and Computer Sciences (School of Mechanics and Mathematics until September 1, 2015) offer Bachelor’s degree programs (4 years of study) in the following specialties: Mathematics — qualification "Bachelor of Mathematics"; Applied Mathematics — qualification “Bachelor of Applied Mathematics”; Computer Sciences and Information Technologies — qualification “Bachelor of Computer Sciences and Information Technologies”; Secondary Education — qualification "Bachelor of Education (Mathematics), Teacher of Mathematics".
On the basis of a Bachelor’s degree, a Master’s degree can be obtained (duration of study — 1.5 years according to the educational-professional program and 2 years according to the educational-scientific program) in the following specialties: 1. Mathematics — qualification "Master of Mathematics, Teacher of Mathematics and Computer Sciences"; 2. Applied Mathematics — qualification "Master of Applied Mathematics"; 3. Applied Mathematics (educational program "Theoretical and Applied Mechanics", educational-professional level) — qualification "Master of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics"; 4. Computer Sciences — qualification "Master of Computer Sciences".
The School offers both state-funded and fee-paying education. Today, about 400 full-time and part-time students study at the School.
The scientific cooperation of the School of Mathematics and Computer Sciences with scientists of universities and research institutes of Ukraine, as well as countries of near and far abroad contributes to the high quality education of graduates.
The creative, highly professional atmosphere at the School of Mathematics and Computer Sciences has always attracted gifted young people. Currently, five winners of international school mathematics competitions and ten winners of the All-Ukrainian Mathematics Olympiad for Schoolchildren study at the School.
History
The School’s glorious history, successful development of mathematics and mechanics, fundamental training of students trace back to the opening of the University, in 1804, and the Departments of Pure Mathematics and Applied Mathematics of the Division of Physical and Mathematical Sciences. The School has deep traditions of selfless work and love for mathematics. These traditions come from the first professor of mathematics at Kharkiv University – T. F. Osypovskyi (1765-1832), who worked at the University from 1803 to 1822 and was the University President in 1813-1820. Among the first alumni of the University was the outstanding mathematician, academician of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences M. V. Ostrogradsky (1801-1862). Later, mathematical traditions were maintained and developed by the efforts of such prominent scientists as, in particular, V. H. Imshenetskyi (1832–1892), K. M. Andrieiev (1848–1921), O. M. Lyapunov (1857–1918), V. A. Stieklov (1864–1926), D. M. Syntsov (1867–1946), S. N. Bernstein (1880–1968). The School of Mechanics and Mathematics was formed in 1961. Its first Dean was Professor D. Z. Hordievskyi (1901–1979). Since September 1, 2015, the School has had a new name — School of Mathematics and Computer Sciences.

The fruitful work of scientists and faculty members earned the most prestigious prizes, awards, medals, honorary titles, grants, commendations. In particular, Academician O. V. Pohorielov is a laureate of the USSR State Prize, the M. I. Lobachevsky International Prize of the USSR Academy of Sciences, the Lenin Prize of the USSR; Academician V. O. Marchenko is a laureate of the Lenin Prize of the USSR, awarded the V. I. Vernadsky Gold Medal of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine; Corresponding Member O. A. Borysenko is a laureate of the N. M. Krylov Prize of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, the State Prize of Ukraine, awarded the Order of Merit, 3rd Class; Professor V. H. Drinfeld is a laureate of the Fields Medal; Professor A. H. Rutkas was awarded the Medal "For Labor Valor", is a laureate of the State Prize of Ukraine; Professor V. I. Korobov was awarded the S. P. Korolev Gold Medal of the Russian Academy of Cosmonautics and is a laureate of the State Prize of Ukraine. Today, research, instruction, methodological and organizational work of the School are provided by 60 faculty members, including an academician and two corresponding members of the NAS of Ukraine, 20 Doctors of Sciences and 30 PhDs. Science, Branches
The scientists and faculty members of the School of Mathematics and Computer Sciences have the most significant achievements in various fields of mathematics and computer sciences; they are founders of many scientific schools in Kharkiv, Kyiv, St. Petersburg, and other cities. Today, each Department of the School conducts research in modern fundamental and applied areas.
The Department of Fundamental Mathematics (Head — Professor Oleksandr Yampolskyi) conducts research in several fields: geometry of submanifolds in Lie groups, stratified spaces, spaces of constant curvature, Riemannian spaces; geometry and topology of bundles, affine differential geometry, nonlinear problems of mathematical physics and qualitative theory of infinite-dimensional dynamical systems, complex and convex analyses, theory of subharmonic functions, growth and value distribution of entire and meromorphic functions, mathematical and statistical physics, various classes of differential equations, including nonlinear integro-differential ones, with a lagging argument and in Banach spaces; analytic theory of probability; geometry of Banach spaces; algebra.
The Department of Applied Mathematics (Head — Laureate of the State Prize of Ukraine, Professor V. I. Korobov): focuses its research on: general theory of analytical solution of the problem of acceptable positional control synthesis with control constraints and its derivatives to the given order, which is based on the control function method and is a further development of the Lyapunov’s direct method; the Markov moment problem on a minimum possible segment and its application in the optimal control theory; the problem of reflection of nonlinear control systems onto linear control systems; the problem of controllability and stabilization of dynamic systems; control of oscillations of the Timoshenko beam; algebraic methods in the theory of nonlinear control systems; numerical methods in singular and hypersingular integral equations of electrodynamics and the theory of diffraction; problems of continuum mechanics and electrodynamics; mathematical modeling of the evolution of physical and financial-economic systems; application of spectral-analytical and probabilistic-statistical methods; theory of functional-differential, impulse and difference equations of Sobolev type; spectral theory of operator pencils; modeling of media with complex properties in electromagnetic fields; magnetohydrodynamic phenomena; equilibrium and stability of forms of the free surface of liquids that can be magnetized and polarized, and solids that levitate in an electromagnetic field; dynamics of shock waves; properties of nanolayer functional coatings; environmental flows of liquids (river-beds, ecosystems); modeling of the arterial, musculoskeletal and dental systems of humans; thermodynamics of biological growth; long-distance liquid transport in plants and animals; biothermohydromechanics; optimal biomechanical systems.
The Department of Higher Mathematics and Computer Sciences (Head — Associate Professor V. T. Lysytsia): studies model representations of nonlinear non-self-adjoint and non-unitary operators and their application; theory of stochastic processes, in particular spectral properties of stochastic processes; methods of solving problems of mathematical physics, theory of nonlinear oscillations; inverse problems; theory of diffraction; problems of computational mathematics and electrodynamics; geometry of manifolds and submanifolds; Hamiltonian systems with closed trajectories.
The Department of Theoretical and Applied Computer Sciences (Head — Professor H. M. Zholtkevych): studies mathematical and computer modeling and its application in software development and research of information and communication, natural, and socio-economic systems; mathematical logic; theory of calculability and its application in the theory of programming and formal software verification; soft computing and its application in mathematical statistics and software engineering; quantum information science. The Department actively cooperates with software development companies such as EPAM, NixSolution, Sigma Software, Cloud Works, and others.
According to a new interdisciplinary program, the School trains specialists in biostatistics on the request and with the support of Intego Group (USA), Experience (USA) companies, and the leading international pharmaceutical corporation Roche Holding AG. This program opens up new opportunities for the School’s graduates to apply their mathematical knowledge and programming skills for supporting the development of new pharmaceuticals.
The School maintains scientific relations with many higher education and research institutions of Ukraine, Russia, the CIS, as well as the USA, France, Germany, Brazil, Great Britain, Vietnam, Israel, Spain, Italy, Canada, China, Mexico, Turkey, and other countries. The Student Research Society successfully works at the School. Even undergraduate students have the opportunity to engage in research work, participate in scientific conferences and publish their research papers. The School offers postgraduate studies in Mathematics; Applied Mathematics; Computer Sciences. The School has two Thesis Committees: for defense of PhD dissertations in Mathematical Analysis; Differential Equations; Mathematical Physics; Mechanics of Liquid, Gas and Plasma" and for defense of PhD and Doctoral dissertations in Mathematical Modeling and Computational Methods; and Information Technologies.
Professional Publications
The School publishes scientific journals "Bulletin of V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University": Series "Mathematics, Applied Mathematics and Mechanics", and Series "Mathematical Modeling. Information Technology. Automated Control Systems", which are professional journals included in the list of the SAC of Ukraine.
Academic Process
Students in all majors receive a fundamental mathematical education during the first two years of study and further in-depth training depending on the chosen major, specialization, and personal interests.
Mathematicians delve into the theoretical labyrinths of mathematical analysis, differential equations, higher algebra, mathematical physics, geometry and topology, mathematical statistics, infinite-dimensional spaces, functional analysis, theory of functions of real and complex variables, homological algebra — theories that make up the huge structure of mathematics of the new 21st century.
Applied mathematicians build models of physical, technical, and financial-economic systems; use modern software to solve problems of numerical modeling, computer geometry, control of systems and processes. They learn to create extensions and addins for computer graphics engineering systems, office and specialized math packages. They are engaged in modeling the motion of liquid, gas and plasma, which is related to the problems of modern technology, materials science, ecology, nano- and biotechnology, aerospace and biomedical applications. They master modern application packages for computer modeling of complex processes; study biomechanics, which is widely used in medicine, sports, and biomedical engineering.
Informatics students, that is future specialists in computer sciences and information technology, learn to develop software for both local and distributed platforms, to protect information in accordance with the international standard for specialist training COMPUTING CURRICULA 2005. They apply mathematical and computer modeling of processes and systems in various fields of natural science and technology. They master system programming, database management systems, mathematical analysis of computer programs, quantum informatics; study and build information systems.
At the end of the 4th year of study, students take a qualifying exam for a Bachelor's degree. Students are enrolled in a Master's program based on the results of a competition, which takes into account their academic performance for the previous 4 years and the results of entrance examinations. Graduates of all schools of any higher education institution can enter a Master’s degree program. Departments that offer Master’s programs in a relevant major provide teaching of special courses and preparation of diploma theses throughout the entire study period.
The School offers a double degree Master's program in Computer Sciences with the University of Nice — Sophia Antipolis (France), which allows students in the last year of Master's training to gain experience of studying abroad, undergo an internship in one of the famous international centers of research in computer science and automation INRIA (France), and receive, in addition to a Master's diploma of our University, a Master's degree from a French university. This program is supported by the Ukrainian and the French governments, as well as by the European ERASMUS+ program. There is a double degree Master's program in Mathematics and Applied Mathematics with the University of L'Aquila (Italy).
