Geology Department

Web site: http://geologia.univer.kharkov.ua/

The Department of Geology offers Bachelor’s degree program (term of training — four years for full-time education, five years for part-time education), Specialist’s and Master’s degree programs (term of training — one year and six months for full-time and part-time education) in geology.

To enter the School of Geology, Geography, Recreation and Tourism, geology major (6.040103), it is required to have the certificates of the Ukrainian Center for Educational Quality Assessment in:

– Ukrainian language and literature;

– history of Ukraine;

– geography or foreign language (English, German, French, Spanish).

The graduates of the Department successfully work in research institutes and geological enterprises in almost all CIS countries, as well as in foreign countries.

To become experts in geology, students study the compulsory humanities and socio-economic disciplines, including philosophy, cultural studies, law, history of Ukraine, Ukrainian language, foreign language, and others. The cycle of basic general scientific disciplines includes: advanced mathematics, chemistry, physics, computer science with GIS, etc.

The professionally oriented disciplines are: general and field geology, historical geology and paleontology, structural geology, geomorphology and quaternary geology, geotectonics, regional geology and geology of Ukraine, general stratigraphy, prospecting and exploration of minerals, and more. The Department provides teaching professionally oriented specialized courses: geological formations, economics, organization and planning of geological exploration, oil and gas geology, metallogeny and structure of metallic mineral fields, prospecting and exploration of oil and gas deposits, micropaleontology, geological exploration and safety, history and methodology of geological sciences, drafting and budgeting, geological survey methods, computer science, and more.

The research areas of the Department are: Mesozoic (Jurassic and Cretaceous) Brachiopoda (morphology, microstructure of shells, stratigraphy, paleobiogeography); Nannoplankton of the Late Mesozoic (Jurassic and Cretaceous); Paleobiogeochemistry of Fossil Invertebrates; Geological Local History — the study of geological and geographical nature monuments.

Educational process: the Department comprises a training laboratory of geomapping, geological exploration and geophysics situated in the village Kamianka of Iziumskyi district of Kharkiv oblast. The Department fully provides conducting the following educational and on-the-job training: «Educational Training on General Geology», «Educational Training on Drilling», «Educational Training on Geological Mapping», «On-the-Job and Pre-Graduation Training», The major research areas are geological survey, prospecting and exploration of mineral deposits, regional, structural and historical geology, paleontology and stratigraphy of the Mesozoic, micropaleontology, paleobiogeochemistry, oil and gas geology.

The future geologists obtain skills of practical activity during the educational and on-the-job training. The educational training takes place in a specially equipped training center situated in the village Kamianka of Iziumskyi district of Kharkiv oblast. The Department’s faculty provide educational training on general geology. The educational training on drilling and educational training on geomapping take place in the Crimea or the Carpathians. The on-the-job training are conducted in geological organizations of Ukraine, and the best students are sent abroad — to Russia, Egypt, Romania.
