Information Technologies in Power Systems

History

The Department was founded in 2001, simultaneously with the establishment of the School of Physics and Energy.

The intellectual core of information technologies during the formation of the information society is mathematical modeling that can be considered as one of the methods of cognition of the real world. Mathematical modeling should be understood as the adequate replacement of the investigated physical phenomenon or process with the corresponding mathematical model and its further study by using the methods of computational mathematics and the means of the state-of-the-art computing technology. At present, mathematical modeling and computational experiment have become part of the common approaches typical of modern information technologies. The practical realization of the possibilities of mathematical modeling and computational experiment significantly increases the efficiency of scientific research and engineering developments, enables to save time and money for the use of recent advances in physics, chemistry, mechanics and other fundamental sciences.

The current state of the use of information technology for the processing of experimental data in applied physics

The development of new methods of processing experimental data, particularly images, is one of the most pressing tasks of modern science. A great number of research groups around the world design new algorithms for image processing, develop and improve the existing methods, create application tools and implement the results of their developments in application packages, which are widely used in many areas of science, medicine, energy and informatics.

Currently, theoretical knowledge and practical skills of using modern computer technologies in the field of image processing are a prerequisite for conducting successful studies of complex physical, technical and energy systems. In this case, the role of computer technology is not limited to complex and lengthy calculations, for example, calculations of integrals or numerical solution of differential equations.

One more indisputable advantage of computer methods is the possibility of carrying out computing experiments that simulate projected research or industrial installations, thus allowing not only to determine the characteristics and parameters of future installations, but also to save time and cut down the financial costs.

A particular, significant area of computer technologies application is a computer support of physical research and management of physical processes in various technical applications. Programmable electronics allows you to conduct automatic data acquisition, to control the systems and mechanisms with high efficiency, solving, for example, in power devices, the problem of increasing the coefficient of efficiency.

Processing and analyzing the experiment data is also one of the applications of computer physics in energy and medicine. At the same time, the visualization of the processed results is becoming more and more important both in research and education. It is worth pointing out that the study of mathematical models of the physical systems using a computer remains the main component of the simulation of image creation processes.

It is important that mathematical modeling allowed to combine formal and informal thinking and the electronic computing machine’s capability “to do formal arithmetic operations, keep track of logical chains with strange properties of the human intellect — intuition, the ability to associate many times faster, more accurate and better than a person”. Not least important is the fact that modern means of information representation give an opportunity to carry on a dialogue with the electronic computing machine: to analyze the alternatives, to check assumptions, to experiment with mathematical models.

Admissions — Unique educational program “Computer Physics” has been opened for applicants.

This year, applicants are offered Bachelor’s and two-year Master’s degree training under the educational program “Computer Physics”

The Department's areas of activities within the framework of this program are designing and development of control systems in energy complexes, mathematical and computer simulation of energy conversion processes and operation of power systems, data processing in power engineering, physics and medicine.

The Department offers a unique balanced teaching of mathematical, physical and programming disciplines. The training programs and course syllabi are drawn up in close collaboration with the leading software development companies.

The training is provided in two educational programs: “Information Technologies in |Physical and Energy Systems” and “Computer Physics”. During the ten-year period of the School's activity, faculty members have accumulated rich experience in teaching disciplines related to mathematical modeling, computational experiment, as well as a number of disciplines associated with the processing of data arrays, particularly images in physics, medicine and power engineering
