The department trains bachelors in biology (major in physiology) and Masters in Physiology (qualification - "physiologist, Teacher"). The scientific bases for performing diploma works in Kharkiv are the Institute of Cryobiology and Cryomedicine (National Academy of Sciences Ukraine); Institute of Endocrine Pathology (Academy of Medical Sciences, Ukraine), and Kharkov Institute of Biology. For more than 85 years, the department is producing a significant number of specialists working in research and medical institutions in Ukraine and many other countries: Russia, Germany, Sweden, USA, Hungary.

The most talented graduates continue their education in the post-graduate school. The department provides full and part-time postgraduate studies. During last 5 years, 18 candidates defended dissertations (including 5 foreign citizens). At present, 6 post-graduate students study and work in the department.

The field of the scientific research of the department includes the physiology of aging and gerontology, cell physiology, immunophysiology, psychophysiology, development of new educational technologies in the field of physiology. Since 1990, considerable attention is paid to investigations of the mechanisms of cell sensitivity to external factors, including those in ontogenesis. At the same time, mechanisms of cell sensitivity to temperature and osmotic effects are investigated as very important for working out the new methods in low-temperature preservation of biological objects.
