Two professors, Dr. Sci. (N. O. Mchedlov-Petrossyan, V. I. Lebed) and seven associate professors, Ph. D. are members of the Department. In total, 18 lecture courses are delivered, and among them ‘Physical Chemistry’, ‘Colloid Chemistry’,  ‘Physical Chemistry of Nonaqueous Solvents’, ‘Organized Systems, Microreactors, and Nanochemistry’, ‘Chemistry of Tensides and Detergents’, and so forth.

The professors and associate professors of the Department published 12 textbooks and manuals during last 3 years. The books of V. I. Lebed ‘Physical Chemistry’ (Folio, 2005) and N. O. Mchedlov-Petrossyan, V. I. Lebed, E. N. Glazkova, S. V. Eltsov, A. M. Dubina, and V. G. Panchenko ‘Fundamentals of Colloid Chemistry’ (Kharkov National University Press, 2004) and ‘Colloid Chemistry’ (Folio, 2005) are approved by the Ministry of Education and Science as textbooks for Higher School.

The scientific activity of the Department is aimed to the developing the physical chemistry of solutions. This direction of research was founded by the worldwide-recognized scientist, corresponding member of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, professor N. Izmailov. Along with traditional liquid-phase systems, the so-called organized solutions are studied. The latter can be considered as a peculiar connecting-link between solution chemistry and colloidal chemistry, serving as a basis for nanotechnology. The results obtained are partly reflected in the monograph of N. O. Mchedlov-Petrossyan ‘Differentiation of the strength of organic acids in true and organized solutions ‘ (Kharkov National University Press, 2004).

During the recent three years, the members of the Department of Physical Chemistry published 66 papers, including 18 papers in international journals.

On 26–30 June 2007, V. Karazin Kharkiv National University hosted the international conference Modern Physical Chemistry for Advanced Materials (MPC’07). The conference celebrated the 100th birthday of Soviet chemist Nikolai Izmailov (1907–1961). The conference was organized under the auspices of IUPAC by V. Karazin Kharkiv National University in cooperation with the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. The Conference was organized by the Physical Chemistry Department and the Department of Material Sci. of our University. A book ‘Scientific heritage of N. A. Izmailov and topical problems of physical chemistry; (Editors: V. I. Lebed, N. O. Mchedlov-Petrossyan, Yu. V. Kholin. Kharkov: V. N. Karazin Kharkov National University, 2007. 675 pages) was issued close to the Conference. 

During recent three years, four Ph. D. thesis were submitted by the post-graduate students and co-workers (engineers and junior researchers). In May 2010, the presentation of the Ph. D. thesis of D. Yu. Filatov is planned. Nine Ph. D. students, researchers and engineers are preparing their thesis; the associated professor N. A. Vodolazkaya is preparing her Dr. Sci. Dissertation for the habilitation in autumn, 2010.
