Department of Cardiology, Laboratory and Functional Diagnostics

Nowadays the Department of Cardiology, Laboratory and Functional Diagnostics is one of the leading in its field in Ukraine owing to the high qualification of its staff, the use of innovative approaches and actual scientific research. The department conducts educational, methodical and scientific activities in the specialty 222 “Medicine” in the field of knowledge 22 “Health” at the School of Medicine. The department appeared quite recently in the structure of V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National University — in 2021.

History of the Department of Cardiology, Laboratory and Functional Diagnostics

The Department of Cardiology was opened in 1979, its organization was entrusted to the associate professor of the Department of Therapy No 3 Shustval N.F. From 1979 to 1988, the Department of Cardiology was located on the basis of the City hospital No 28 of the Kievskiy district, and in 1988 it was transferred to the base of the newly built Medical-sanitary unit of the Kharkov Tractor Engine Plant (now the City Clinical Hospital No 8). In 1995, the Department of Cardiology was renamed to the Department of Cardiology and Functional Diagnostics.

Since 2000, the department has been headed by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Full Professor, Honored Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine, Laureate of the State Prize of Ukraine, professional member of European Society of Cardiology, Board Member of the All-Ukrainian Association of Cardiologists of Ukraine, Chairman of the Kharkiv Organization of the All-Ukrainian Association of Cardiologists of Ukraine, Honorary Doctor of the V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National University, Vira Yosypivna Tseluyko.

The department annually conducts specialization courses in Cardiology and Functional diagnostics, thematic improvement on the topics “Clinical ECG in the practice of a medical doctor”, “Cardiomyopathies and inflammatory heart diseases”, “Cardiovascular pathology and pregnancy”, “ECG in emergency conditions”, “Thrombotic complications in cardiology”, etc. More than 7 thousand students have been trained at the department, and about 500 doctors from different regions of Ukraine undergo training during the year. More than 100 foreign clinical residents and postgraduates from 21 countries of the world have studied at the department.

The work of the department staff is constantly diracted to improvement of educational, scientific, therapeutic and diagnostic activities.

Department of Cardiology appeared in the structure of V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National University in 2021 and the department name was changed from “Cardiology and Functional diagnostics” to ”Cardiology, Laboratory and Functional diagnostics”.

The material and technical support of the department is at the highest level and fully complies with international standards.

The Department has conditions for conducting educational process at its clinical bases: City Cinical Hospital No. 8 and cardiology department of Regional Clinical Hospital. Lectures are held in the lecture hall equipped with modern multimedia system and computers. There are study rooms with educational and methodical equipment for practical classes and also computers with access to the Internet.

The material and technical support of hospitals allows educational process to be held at high modern level and provides an opportunity for students to directly participate in the process of examining patients, using the diagnostic potential of clinics. Modern diagnostic equipment is used at clinical bases of the Department - Coronary angiography and stenting of coronary vessels, Computed tomography, Magnetic resonance imaging. Such diagnostic methods as ECG, TT and TE Echocardiography with Doppler, loading tests, Transesophageal pacing, Ambulatory monitoring of blood pressure and Holter ECG, measurement of central aortic pressure parameters are widely used. Laboratory research methods in the field of biochemistry, immunology, genetics are being improved.

The department staff has developed distance learning courses. A bank of educational video and audio materials has been prepared.

Head of the Department of Cardiology, Laboratory and Functional Diagnostics, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Full Professor, Honored Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine, Laureate of the State Prize of Ukraine, professional member of the European Society of Cardiology, Board Member of the All-Ukrainian Association of Cardiologists of Ukraine, Chairman of the Kharkiv Organization of the All-Ukrainian Association of Cardiology of Ukraine, Honorary Doctor of V.N.Karazin Kharkiv National University, Vira Yosypivna Tseluyko.

Vira Yosypivna was awarded the M.D. Strazhesko Medal of "Merit in Health Care", numerous diplomas of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, diplomas of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and the Academy of Medical Sciences, was awarded the “Medics Triumph” award in the nomination “The most active local organizer of the Distance Learning project”.

In 1980, after graduating from the Kharkov Medical Institute, she was recommended by the Scientific Council of the Institute for scientific work, that was begun under the guidance of Academician L.T. Malaya. Vira Yosipivna went through all the stages of scientist formation - from a laboratory assistant with a higher education to a leading researcher and head of the department of atherosclerosis genetics. In 1985 she defended her Ph.D. thesis in cardiology on the topic “Prostanoids of blood plasma in the dynamics of lipid-lowering therapy in patients with coronary atherosclerosis”, and in 1994 — her doctoral thesis in two specialties “Cardiology” and “Genetics” on the topic “Clinical-anamnestic and genetic aspects of coronary heart disease in young people”.

In 2000 Vira Tseluyko was awarded the academic title of Full Professor and from the same year she headed the Department of Cardiology and Functional Diagnostics. The fellowship abroad (USA, 2001), participation in European, American and World Cardiological Congresses and Conferences were of great importance for the growth of her scientific potential. The first report of Professor V.Y. Tseluyko was back in 1997 at the European Congress of Atherosclerosis in Paris.

In collaboration with scientists from the Institute of Molecular Biology and Genetics and the Institute of Gerontology, Vira Yosypivna began molecular genetic research in cardiology for the first time in Ukraine, the results of these studies were noted by the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine as the best research work of the five years. In addition, Vira Yosypivna has always worked closely with scientists from the M.D. Strazhesko Institute of Cardiology, M.M. Amosov National Institute of Cardiovascular Surgery, Heart Institute of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine.

Under the guidance of prof. V.Y. Tseluyko 4 doctoral and 35 candidate dissertations have been completed. Author of 8 monographs, “Handbook of a Cardiologist” (4 reprints), “Lectures on Clinical Cardiology” (2 editions), more than 600 articles in various journals.

About 500 doctors from different regions of Ukraine undergo training during the year at the department headed by the professor. More than 100 foreign clinical residents and postgraduates from 21 countries of the world have studied at the department.

Professor V.Y. Tseluyko is a well-known scientist in Ukraine and in the world. First Ukrainian registries of patients with myocardial infarction, cardiomyopathy and pulmonary embolism were created under her leadership, centers for the diagnosis and treatment of secondary arterial hypertension and the rehabilitation of cardiac patients after surgical treatment were organized.

The staff of the department for 2021 includes 3 doctors of medical sciences, professors; 4 associate professors, PhD; 5 assistants, PhD. The percentage of people working at the main place of work is 66.7 %, and external part-time workers - 33.3 %.

In order to maintain a high scientific and educational level, the department staff undergoes advanced training courses, specializations, thematic improvements, takes part in conferences, congresses annually (on- and off line), etc.

Educational work of the Department of Cardiology, Laboratory and Functional Diagnostics

The department teaches doctors and students in Ukrainian, Russian (for Russian-speaking foreign students) and English in accordance with the recommendations of the standard discipline programs approved by the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine. The educational process is carried out using modern multimedia and computer technology and innovative approaches to the educational process (online consultations, discussion of various issues in voice and text chat, remote control of knowledge, etc.).

In the educational process doctors and students have the opportunity to learn about the work of modern therapeutic and diagnostic equipment, which is available at the department. In practical classes, students, together with teachers of the department, take part in clinical examination and clinical analysis of patients, consultations, rounds, gaining clinical and practical experience already at the stage of training.

The department trains students in Ukrainian, Russian (for Russian-speaking foreign students) and English in the following disciplines: cardiology, laboratory and functional diagnostics.

Methodical work of the Department of Cardiology, Laboratory and Functional Diagnostics

The methodical work of the department is carried out on an ongoing basis, and its result is a complete methodological support of the department disciplines. Prepared teaching materials are available to students in electronic form online, as well as in printed form.

The result of the department methodical work over the period of its existence is preparation of “Course of lectures on clinical cardiology”, which was supplemented and republished in 2020, “Handbook of Cardiology”, published in 2009, reissued in 2012, 2014 and 2017 by the department staff under the leadership of V.Y. Tseluyko. In addition, methodical developments and tutorials have been published. Methodical support packages have been developed and are constantly kept up-to-date for the main cardiological pathologies, including methods for assessing students' knowledge, methodical recommendations for practical exercises and for independent work, bases of test and situational tasks for the current control of knowledge, lists of check questions and recommended literature, multimedia presentations of lectures, etc.

Scientific work of the Department of Cardiology, Laboratory and Functional Diagnostics

Scientific research in various problems of cardiology has been held by the department staff since its foundation. Under the leadership of V.Y. Tseluyko more than 35 candidate dissertations and 4 doctoral dissertations were defended.

The department staff takes part in international clinical trials. The results of the department's own scientific research during its existence are reflected in articles published in journals with impact-factor, that are included in foreign scientometric databases. More than 1000 articles were published in domestic specialized journals. Innovative approaches in scientific research are confirmed by numerous patents and copyright certificates.

The department conducts scientific and practical conferences, the department staff prepares reports on their own scientific research results at conferences, congresses, including international ones.

Clinical bases of the Department of Cardiology, Laboratory and Functional Diagnostics

The clinical bases of the department are the Cardiology department of the Kharkiv Regional Clinical Hospital and the City Clinical Hospital No. 8.

Kharkiv Regional Clinical Hospital is a modern multidisciplinary medical institution. A 60-bed cardiological department with an intensive care unit is modernly equipped.

City Clinical Hospital No. 8 is represented by 6 cadiological departments: two infarction departments, intensive care unit where emergency cardiological care is provided, rehabilitation department after acute myocardial infarction, department for the treatment of symptomatic hypertension, cardiological department and rheumatology department.
