The School of Medicine of V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University was created simultaneously with the founding of the University on January 17, 1805, which makes the School of Medicine one of the oldest medical higher education institutions in Ukraine and Eastern Europe. The School gave the world great medical scientists and practitioners: therapist D. F. Lyambl, surgeons P. M. Shumlianskyi, V. F. Hrube, and M. P. Trinkler, obstetrician I. P. Lazarevych, ophthalmologist L. L. Hirshman, physiologist V. Ya. Danylevskyi, and others.
As a part of Karazin University the School of Medicine revived in March 1993. Since that time, the School has passed a path of active development and improvement, prepared thousands of doctors and scientists who work in Ukraine and abroad, and raised the quality of higher medical education to the European level. The School gives its students the opportunity to receive a higher medical education within the walls of a classical university, the necessary and essential component of which is the academic triad — unity of education, science and clinical practice.
Undoubtedly, only a classical university with advanced facilities for teaching and studying biomedical and natural disciplines can provide perfect conditions for shaping and improving future doctors’ clinical, scientific and medical thinking by using a powerful research and teaching potential of other Schools of the University: School of Biology, School of Chemistry, School of Physics and Mathematics, and others. Studying at Karazin University gives students a unique opportunity to get a second degree in economics, management, law, psychology, mathematics, foreign languages, and so on.
Nowadays, Karazin University School of Medicine is one of the leading medical higher education institutions of Ukraine that offer a Master’s degree program in 222 Medicine, field of study 22 Health Care (certificate РД-IV No. 219309 and license АВ No. 498462 of November 25, 2009), with a glorious history and traditions, which are organically intertwined with innovative approaches to the academic process and integration of modern technologies. At 11 departments, the School teaches more than 3,700 students from 40 countries of the world (Africa, Asia, Middle East, Europe, etc.) in Ukrainian, Russian (for Russian-speaking foreign students), and in English. All subjects are taught according to advanced programs recommended by the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine. Upon graduation, students receive a state standard diploma (in Ukrainian and English) and an international diploma supplement, which are filled out according to the requirements of the European Commission, the Council of Europe, and UNESCO-CEPES. The diploma of Karazin University School of Medicine enables graduates to undergo clinical internship in all medical specialties, except for dentistry and preventive medicine (order of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine No. 621 of 21.11.2005).
A high quality of medical education is achieved due to the combination of classical university approaches and innovative technologies. Teaching activity at the School of Medicine is conducted by leading specialists in their fields, among whom are more than 35 Professors, Doctors of Medicine, and 170 Associate Professors, PhDs in Medicine, Merited Doctors, and Workers of Science and Technology of Ukraine, winners of state and international awards. The average teaching experience of the School’s faculty members is over 12 years. All subjects are taught in accordance with the requirements of the Bologna Process, and the level of methodological support for subjects is equal to 100%. All the academic staff members annually take numerous advanced training courses which allows to maintain a high quality of education.
The School’s staff perform a huge amount of clinical and therapeutic work with active involvement of students in leading medical institutions of Ukraine, which are the clinical bases of the School, in particular I. I. Mechnikov Institute of Microbiology and Immunology of the NAMS of Ukraine, V. T. Zaitsev Institute of General and Urgent Surgery of the NAMS of Ukraine, Institute of Health Protection of Children and Adolescents of the NAMS of Ukraine, Institute of Neurology, Psychiatry and Narcology of the NAMS of Ukraine, Central Clinical Hospital of “Ukrzaliznytsia”, Road Clinical Hospital of Kharkiv Station “Pivdenna Zaliznytsia”, Kharkiv Regional Infectious Diseases Hospital, Kharkiv Perinatal Center, Academician V. I. Hryshchenko Clinic for Reproductive Medicine, and so on. The level of material and technical support of the clinical bases meets European standards and is one of the highest in Ukraine, which gives students the opportunity to get acquainted with state-of-the-art medical and diagnostic equipment.
Research is an integral part of the School’s activity. The School’s employees are co-executors of more than 30 research projects and international studies. Since the revival of the School in 1993, its staff members have defended 15 doctoral and more than 75 PhD theses, published more than 150 articles in journals included in international scientometric databases, more than 2,000 articles in domestic professional journals, and over 2,000 articles in other publications, received more than 200 patents for scientific inventions. The School of Medicine is the organizer of 150 research and practice conferences, including 58 international ones. The School of Medicine has signed numerous agreements on scientific cooperation, exchange of experience, and student internships with leading medical research institutions of Ukraine, Great Britain, the USA, Spain, Italy, Australia, South Africa, Japan, Sweden, and other countries. The School publishes two scientific journals included in the list of professional editions of the State Accreditation Commission of Ukraine and in international scientometric databases (Index Copernicus international and RISC).
The research work of the School involves students who are members of scientific clubs of departments and the School of Medicine Research Society. The result of their activity is 12 research and practice conferences with international participation, publication of more than 150 studies, dozens of medical, social, and preventive actions and events, numerous diplomas and awards at the Ukrainian and international events for students and young scientists. Students study in modern and comfortable classrooms, with a total area of over 150 thousand square meters, located in the heart of Kharkiv — Svobody Square. The School has a collection of micro and macro preparations, which includes more than 6,000 exhibits; there are three computer classrooms — more than 150 modern PCs connected to the Internet and the internal network of the School. Most of the premises are equipped with free high-speed Wi-Fi Internet access. The Central Scientific Library provides access for students to 4 million copies of different editions, including via the Internet. If necessary, students are provided with accommodation in comfortable dormitories of the University, with a total area of more than 51 thousand square meters.
Students may do sports using a well-developed sports infrastructure of the University. There are 24 cafes, buffets, and canteens at the University. The University provides an opportunity of summer rest for students of the School of Medicine at the Fihurovka Sports and Health Camp. The School’s students are members of numerous creative associations and amateur talent groups, annually participate in mass entertainment and cultural events.
A high quality of education obtained by the School of Medicine students is confirmed by international and all-Ukrainian rankings of high education institutions, among which Karazin University is in the top three according to QS World University Rankings, Webometrics Ranking of World's Universities, SciVerse Scopus, “Top 200 of Ukraine” UNESCO, and others.
