Horizon 2020 is the biggest EU research and innovation program ever with 80 billion euros of funding for 7 years (2014 to 2020). This program supports research and innovation developments and is a financial instrument aimed at securing Europe's global competitiveness.

Horizon 2020 is divided into three areas: Excellent Science, Industrial Leadership and Societal Challenges.

The main goals of the program are to bring European science to the world level, remove barriers to innovation and make it easier for the public and private sectors to work together to conduct joint research and create innovative products. Horizon 2020 is open to everyone. It has a simple structure that reduces red tape and time so participants can focus on what is really important. This approach makes sure new projects get off the ground quickly – and achieve results faster.

The EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation also provides for measures to further develop the European Research Area. These measures will aim at breaking down barriers to create a single market for knowledge, research and innovation.

Ukraine in Horizon 2020

Based on the statistics published by the R&ILinks2UA project, 90 projects with the participation of Ukrainian organizations were selected for funding under the Horizon 2020 competitions in the period from 2014 to 2018. The total amount of funding received by Ukrainian participants in these projects amounted to 17.23 million euros. Researchers from Ukraine participate in almost all thematic areas of Horizon 2020, and the amount of funding for Ukrainian organizations under the priority "Smart, environmentally friendly and integrated transport" placed second among all priority areas and amounted to 2,770,706 euros.
