DAAD

DAAD is the German Academic Exchange Service, founded on the initiative of students in Heidelberg in 1925. Today it is one of the most important organizations promoting international academic exchanges.

DAAD is the world's largest organization for international exchange of students and researchers. It is a registered association with its headquarters in Bonn, its members are all state-accredited universities and student representatives of these universities. DAAD has 14 representative offices and 50 information centers around the world. More than 200 DAAD exchange programs cover all disciplines and countries of the world. Thanks to DAAD, many students, faculty and scientists have been able to gain valuable experience abroad.

Competitions for most scholarship programs are announced every fall. DAAD scholarships offer a variety of training, internship, research and development opportunities at German universities or research institutions. Students are also offered scholarships to participate in summer German language courses and study trips to Germany. Financial support depends on the category of the participant and the program duration.

On February 5, 1998, the “Memorandum of Cooperation between the Ministry of Education of Ukraine and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD)” was signed in Kyiv, providing for the opening of a DAAD office in Kyiv. The office opened on April 16, 1998. It is located on the territory of the National Technical University of Ukraine “Kyiv Polytechnic Institute”.

The Service implements many projects that provide opportunities for undergraduate, postgraduate students, PhDs and doctors of sciences, etc. to study in Germany, take refresher courses or internships. The scholarship covers the costs of staying in the country. Through numerous events (visit programs, meetings of former DAAD fellows, participation in educational exhibitions and conferences), DAAD facilitates the establishment of scientific contacts between German and foreign scholars.

Since its founding, DAAD has supported over 1.9 million people from Germany and abroad. The German Academic Exchange Service is an association of German universities and student organizations. Its activities go far beyond awarding scholarships. DAAD supports the internationalization of German universities, promotes German studies and the German language abroad, assists developing countries in establishing effective universities and advises decision makers on matters of education, research and development policy.

Scholarships for the best

DAAD provides opportunities for young people from Germany and other countries to gain experience of internships abroad for study or research. Most foreign DAAD fellows are graduate and postgraduate students. Scholarship programs are aimed at graduates because they already have the first evidence of their academic success and can benefit more from scholarships than undergraduate students. Therefore, DAAD provides scholarships for a full course of undergraduate programs only for the best graduates of German schools abroad.

World network

The budget for scholarships comes mainly from the federal funds of various ministries, primarily the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the European Union and enterprises, organizations and governments of foreign countries. DAAD’s headquarters are in Bonn, and there is also an office in Berlin. The network of foreign representative offices and information centers maintains contact with the most important partner countries on all continents and provides on-site consultations.

In Ukraine, DAAD has an extensive network:

  • 15 lecturers, 6 language assistants and 1 instructor in the "Long-Term Associate Professor" program;
  • “German & European Studies” educational program at the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy;
  • 5 bilateral partnership agreements between philological institutions;
  • 4 educational programs with partial teaching in German.
