Karazin University Becomes Part of the Consortium on European Biodiversity Genomics Under the Horizon Europe Program
Karazin University representatives as members of the consortium of research organizations and universities won a grant under the largest program of the European Union for research and innovation "Horizon Europe".
The Karazinites are implementing the research project “Biodiversity Genomics Europe” dedicated to the involvement of genomic data and methods for description, monitoring and conservation of biodiversity on the continent.
The project aims to continue working on DNA biodiversity barcoding through a large-scale reading of a unique short section of the genome for each of the known species, which should become its genetic identifier. This will greatly help in the inventory of species and observations of changes in ecosystems.
Karazin University is the only Ukrainian higher education institution that has joined the project and represents Ukraine. The consortium included 33 research organizations and universities from 20 countries in Europe and North America. The project is coordinated by the Naturalis Biodiversity Center (Leiden, the Netherlands).
At Karazin University, the project will be implemented by the School of Biology and the University Museum of Nature, the duration of the project is 42 months.
