Ukrainian Team Comprising Karazinites Places Fourth at the European Futsal Championship
From 19 January to 6 February 2022, Europe's 16 strongest futsal teams competed for the title of champion in the Netherlands.
The national team of Ukraine comprised representatives of Karazin University: Yaroslav Lebid (graduate of the School of Economics) and Danyil Abakshyn (graduate of the School of Radiophysics, Biomedical Electronics and Computer Systems). One more graduate of the School of Economics, Serhii Malyshko, missed the championship due to an injury he suffered in a friendly match against Azerbaijan.
In the group stage, the Ukrainian team lost to the Netherlands 2-3, defeated Serbia (6-1) and lost to the current world and European champions, Portugal, in a tense battle with a score of 0-1. As a result, Ukraine became the second in its group and reached the playoff.
In the quarterfinal, the Ukrainians sensationally defeated the national team of Kazakhstan with a score of 5-3, in the semifinals lost to the Russians (2-3), and in the match for bronze medals — the Spanish team (1-4).
Danyil Abakshyn scored two goals and one assist during the tournament, Yaroslav Lebid scored one goal and made four assists.
Fourth place at the European Championship is an undeniably successful performance. The players of the team thus fulfilled the standard for awarding the sports title "Master of Sports of Ukraine of International Class".
