P. T. Tronko Center for Area Studies was founded as a scientific structural unit of V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University in 2008. The Center coordinates research in the field of area studies at the University, in Kharkiv and Kharkiv oblast. Created under the aegis of the All-Ukrainian Association of area studies professionals, the Center is designed to preserve and develop the traditions of scientific area studies.

The Center’s staff members regularly participate in conferences, symposia, workshops, round-table and panel discussions addressing the relevant issues related to area studies, organize competitions of student scientific works in the field, investigate and generalize the experience of area studies nuclei, assist faculty and students, as well as other interested parties, in conducting area studies research.

The Center’s staff members are also engaged in promoting the historical and cultural heritage of our region in the media, holding consultations for teachers of the city and the oblast teaching the subject «Kharkiv Region Studies». The Center serves as the basis for classes in historian area studies, including the optional ones, various excursions, consultations as to creating displays for museums and exhibitions. It is involved in accomplishing projects related to publication of archive materials, area studies literature, and other printed matter (first of all, in preparing different calendars of memorable dates, anniversary collections, encyclopaedic and reference literature, guides).

The Center cooperates with academic and educational institutions specializing in the Humanities, the Ukrainian Society for Preservation of Historical and Cultural Monuments, and other organizations.
