Erasmus Mundus is an educational program of the European Union, the main objective of which is to promote international cooperation and to increase mobility among students, faculty, researchers of higher education institutions in third countries. Trying to turn the EU into the world leader in education and European universities — into knowledge and innovation centers, Erasmus Mundus programme also aims at promoting mutual understanding between people, encouraging the intercultural dialogue.

Erasmus Mundus programme was launched by the European Union for EU non-member countries in 2004. Graduate students and researchers from different countries including Ukraine have an opportunity to receive EU grants to continue their studies or conduct research at higher scientific institutions of EU countries.

Erasmus Mundus was created as a response to the challenges that the present-day higher education system is facing: preparing European citizens for life in a globalized multicultural society based on knowledge and education, improving the quality and attractiveness of European higher education. Such principles conform to the Lisbon strategy of the EU, according to which the governments of the EU member states are committed to making European economy competitive and capable of dynamic development while making the European higher education system affordable and of the best quality in the world. The Programme also supports Bologna process implementation by encouraging recognition of academic degrees and helping university education become international.
